Glycogen is the body's stored form of glucose, found primarily in skeletal muscle and the liver, where it serves as a readily available fuel source during exercise. During prolonged or intense exercise, muscle and liver glycogen stores are progressively depleted to meet energy demands, making carbohydrate intake before, during, and after exercise essential for maintaining performance and replenishing these stores.
Additionally, glycogen is synthesized from dietary carbohydrates at rest, broken down during exercise, and is used depends on exercise intensity and training status. Higher intensities rely more heavily on glycogen. Endurance training increases both glycogen storage capacity and the body's ability to conserve it.
